Golf in and around the local area
For golfers, Wales is a voyage of discovery. It is a country so perfectly designed for the game, it's as if the forces of nature conspired to make it this way. There are some 200 courses set amidst the most spectacular scenery. With inspirational links, parkland courses in mountain settings, championship courses in the shadow of mighty medieval castles and luxuriously modern golfing resorts, Wales really is a golfer's paradise.

The speed with which Celtic Manor has impressed itself on the world golfing scene is little short of miraculous. Less than seven years after it was founded in 1995, it was selected as the host course for The 2010 Ryder Cup.
Already one of the leading golf complexes in Europe, Celtic Manor opened the new Twenty Ten Course in 2007 - the first course in history to be purpose-built for staging The Ryder Cup.
The Resort boasts three championship courses in all and a floodlit golf academy plus a 400 bed Five Star hotel and health spa. Costing 20 million, including the construction of a second large and luxurious golf clubhouse at the Resort, the spectacular Twenty Ten features water hazards on half of its holes and many more risk and reward dilemmas designed to create thrilling team matchplay during
The Ryder Cup. Home of the 1.8m Celtic Manor Wales Open, the Twenty Ten has also been built with spectators in mind and the 50,000 people a day who will attend golf's greatest team tournament in 2010 will benefit from vast viewing slopes on a natural hillside which abuts the closing holes.
The original Roman Road course was designed by the legendary architect, Robert Trent Jones, following a chance meeting with Celtic Manor owner Sir Terry Matthews which would become a lasting friendship.
The other 18-hole course at Celtic Manor, The Montgomerie, bears the name of its designer, the Ryder Cup star who remained true to his roots in Scottish links golf when planning deep pot bunkers and tricky greenside swales.

|
One of the classic Welsh links courses, Ashburnham celebrated its centenary in 1994 by staging the British Home International Team Championships.
This was the latest in a long line of important tournaments held here since the early 1900's when Harry Vardon said 'This is the course I like best in Wales'. His sentiments have been endorsed by more modern professionals. Bernard Gallagher, past captain of Europe's Ryder Cup team, won his first tournament, the 1969 Schweppes, at Ashburnham and it was here that Sam Torrance, another European Ryder Cup captain, also gained his first title, the 1976 Martini.
Overlooking Carmarthen Bay, the course has its first two and final two holes inland near the clubhouse. Holes three to eight strike out, parallel to the sea, straight into the prevailing wind and holes 9 to 15 run back with the wind directly behind. With out of bounds and assorted trouble on the right in both directions there is no peace for the slicer. Neither are the fairways of a generous width and the fact that the current course record is no lower than 70 bears witness to the credentials of the challenge.

Golf World has recently named Machynys the finest new course of 2005. Wales' first Nicklaus-designed golf course, a challenging 7,100 yard par-72, shows maturity way beyond its fledgling season. Golf World were not the only ones to be impressed by its splendour. The course, set in the Millennium Coastal Park in Llanelli and overlooking Carmarthen Bay, has already hosted the Ladies European Tour for the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe. Design consultant Gary Nicklaus says the experience is spectcular, "When the tide is out and the sky is clear, it is truly breathtaking."
